Shah Rukh Khan Nearly Quit 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' After Four Days of Shooting, Director Nikkhil Advani Recalls

The iconic film 'Kal Ho Naa Ho', starring Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Preity Zinta, is soon to mark its 20th anniversary. Director Nikkhil Advani, who made his directorial debut with this heart-wrenching film, recently shared that SRK was on the verge of quitting the film due to an injury after just four days of shooting. The filmmakers decided to postpone the film and wait for Shah Rukh to recover. In an interview with Rajshri Unplugged, Nikkhil revealed, "Shah Rukh fell ill with his back after four days of shooting, and he said, ‘Take me out of the film’. We said no and we decided to delay it. We delayed the film by six months." Nikkhil also disclosed the immense pressure he faced while filming 'Kal Ho Naa Ho'. He explained, "There was pressure because ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ had done so well. If the next film from Dharma Productions under Karan did not do well, then all the blame would have been on the fact that the 100% track record was spoiled by Nikkhil Advani. So the pressure was immense."

Discussing the film's locations, Nikkhil mentioned that New York was a challenging and expensive location to shoot in. He said, "Nobody had ever shot in New York before. People had gone till London, people had gone to Switzerland, people had gone to Europe. To shoot in New York, which has its own problems with unions and… It’s an expensive location to shoot for a first-time filmmaker or a debut filmmaker. But Yash Johar was a master with taking any production challenge up. So it was not a very easy film." 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' was released in 2003.
